(KRON) -- The Pacific Gas and Electric Company has preemptively shut off power for nearly a thousand customers across three Bay Area counties on Thursday. The planned multi-day public safety power shutoffs (PSPS) come as weather officials warn of a “near-critical” fire weather threat due to gusty winds and low humidity.
Impacted regions of the current PSPSs in the Bay Area include Alameda, Contra Costa and Santa Clara counties.
In Alameda County, 639 customers in unincorporated areas are part of the PSPS, according to PG&E. Power was shut off for affected customers between 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Thursday and is expected to be restored on Saturday at 4 p.m.
In Contra Costa County, 270 customers in Concord, Pittsburg and unincorporated areas are impacted, PG&E said. Power was shut off Thursday between 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. and is expected to be restored for all customers on Saturday at noon.
In Santa Clara County, 48 customers in unincorporated areas are part of the PSPS, according to PG&E. Power was shut off Thursday starting between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. and is expected to be restored on Saturday at 10 a.m.
The National Weather Service forecasted elevated wind gusts of 20 to 35 miles per hour in the East Bay hills and eastern Santa Clara County for Thursday through Sunday. Afternoon humidity is expected to be as low as 15 to 25 percent.
“We know how difficult it is for customers to have their power shut off proactively,” PG&E Spokesperson Tamar Sarkissian told KRON4 on Wednesday, “so we don’t do these lightly but if we have enough of those factors, safety is our number one priority and that’s when we’ll call as PSPS.”
PG&E customers can use the utility's power outage website to determine if they may be impacted by current or upcoming public safety power shutoffs.
