For many families in Ukiah, summer isn’t a vacation – it’s a challenge. When school lets out, the free, nutritious meals students count on often disappear, leaving a painful question for some households:
What will my child eat today?
Thanks to a federally funded summer meal program, Ukiah Unified School District is helping to answer that question with compassion and consistency. From now through August 8, free meals – breakfast and/or lunch depending on the site – are available to all children and teens 18 and under, with no application or registration required.
“Yesterday, one of our sites served meals to 96 children,” said Julie Beer, Director of Nutritional Services for Ukiah Unified. “That’s 96 kids who left with full stomachs and one less worry for their parents. Programs like this do more than feed kids – they sustain families through the toughest part of the year.”
Ukiah Unified serves a community where nearly 80% of students qualify for free or reduced-price meals. In fact, during the school year, every child eats for free. But summer presents a gap, and it’s one the district is determined to close.
“We know that hunger doesn’t take a break just because school does,” said Beer. “By providing consistent access to healthy meals all summer long, we’re helping kids stay nourished, active, and ready to learn when they return in August.”
