Plans have been announced for the 23rd annual LGBTIQA2S+ Pride Event in Mendocino County. The Ukiah Pride March and ResistDance will kick off at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 20, from Alex Thomas Plaza in downtown Ukiah. The Raging Grannies of Mendocino will rally marchers with songs and chants, and the sidewalk march will wind its way to the County Courthouse, where speeches and dancing will remind attendees about the history of Pride events, why it is important that the marches continue, and why keeping love and joy at the forefront of Pride events is important.
The first Pride marches happened in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco in 1970, the summer after the Stonewall Rebellion in New York City. The first Pride event in Mendocino County was organized by volunteers in 2002 and included Lake County in a joint celebration. A number of years ago the Ukiah-based organization that had been organizing the annual celebrations lost its non-profit status. Since then individual volunteers have stepped forward to organize events, adding the first annual Pride March in 2014, taking the cause and the celebration to the streets.
The June 20 Pride March/ResistDance is happening because individuals from two ally groups stepped up to make sure a June event happens in Ukiah this year to celebrate Pride and speak out about current push backs at the Federal level. Indivisible Ukiah and Community Action Alliance are sponsoring the event, demonstrating how important allies can be when parts of the community are under attack. More information about the sponsors is available on their social media sites, and information about additional Pride events around the county is available on the Mendo Pride facebook page.
