ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Thursday marks Juneteenth. The federal holiday marks the day that enslaved people in Texas learned about their freedom, two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
City and county offices are closed for the holiday. On Wednesday, the City of Rochester held its annual Juneteenth Block Party. Here are some events on Thursday to celebrate Juneteenth:
Celebration at The International Plaza
The International Plaza is hosting a celebration with a market, food, and live music to honor African American culture. The celebration on North Clinton Avenue runs from noon to 6 p.m.
RMSC
RMSC is hosting a celebration on Juneteenth from noon to 5 p.m. Guests can create buttons to commemorate the holiday, learn about Black history during a storytime, shop at a Black-owned Business Bazaar, and more. You see the complete schedule here.
