Warm temps for Juneteenth in Charlotte ahead of potential damaging winds, hail in afternoon

(PINPOINT WEATHER) -- We’re looking at a Pinpoint Weather Alert Day on this Juneteenth, with storms likely to cross the Carolinas ahead of an approaching cold front.

Thursday sits in the low to mid-70s this morning with relatively light winds flowing out of the southwest between 5 and 10 miles per hour. We’ll have mostly sunny skies with another day expected to ramp up into the low 90s.

A low-pressure system over Michigan will continue to track north and east and sweep a cold front through the eastern United States. As the cold front approaches the Carolinas, we’ll see a line of storms cross the Tennessee border.

These storms will likely break up a bit in our higher elevations, but some storms may hold together long enough to impact areas from the I-40 Corridor into Uptown. These storms will have the potential to pack a punch in the form of damaging winds and large hail, so be on the lookout for some downed trees and spotty power outages later this evening.

We’ll hold on to a slight risk for severe weather near Uptown and stretch north and east towards the mid-Atlantic. The rest of our area will see a marginal risk for severe weather. These are levels 1 and 2 out of 5.

Storms taper off tonight as lows bottom out in the low 70s under partly cloudy skies. Dew points will come down drastically, which will make for a less humid end to the work week despite 90s being on tap.

We’ll be dry through the weekend, with a BIG warm-up coming in early next week. Saturday and Sunday will sit in the low to mid-90s before the upper 90s take hold on Monday.

We’ll keep the excessive heat coming early next week before storm chances return Tuesday and Wednesday.

Thursday: Partly Cloudy & Hot with Afternoon Showers & Storms. High: 92.

Thursday Night: Partly Cloudy & Comfortable as Rain Tapers Off. Low: 70.
