Tilak Varma officially drafted into red-ball squad for matches in England

Young Team India batter Tilak Varma has signed a deal with Hampshire County Cricket Club for a short red-ball stint in the ongoing Rothesay County Championship. Tilak Varma will feature in four first-class matches between June 22 and August 1, as Hampshire officially announced the signing.

The left-handed batter has an impressive record in red-ball cricket. Varma has scored over 1,200 runs in 18 first-class matches at an average of 50.16. He has hit five centuries and four fifties, including one for India A against New Zealand A. Notably, he hasn’t played a first-class match since September 2024.

Hampshire Director of Cricket Giles White said that Tilak Varma will be available for the next four County Championship matches. He added that the club is eager to see the impact Varma can make during his stint this summer.

"It’s fantastic to have Tilak available for the next four County Championship matches," said Giles White, as quoted by Cricbuzz.

"He’s an exciting talent who has already made a big impact on the international stage and in the IPL, and we look forward to seeing what he can do for Hampshire this summer."

Hampshire Seventh in Division One of the County Championship

Hampshire, who were acquired by Indian conglomerate GMR Group, are seventh in Division One of the County Championship. The team will be hoping that Tilak Varma provides stability to their batting line-up, which has struggled since former captain James Vince retired from red-ball cricket.

Varma is set to make his County debut against Essex at Chelmsford from June 22 to 25. He will then feature in a home fixture against Worcestershire from June 29 to July 2.

Other Indian players have also joined the County Championship. Ruturaj Gaikwad is expected to join Yorkshire for the latter part of the summer, while Yuzvendra Chahal is due to return to Northamptonshire later this month.

Tilak Varma Has Played 29 International Matches for India

Tilak Varma has played 29 international matches for India. He has scored 749 runs in 25 T20Is at an average of 49.93, including two centuries and three half-centuries. Varma holds the highest average among batters from ICC full-member nations and the second-highest overall in men’s T20Is.

The left-handed batter joined the Mumbai Indians (MI) ahead of the 2022 season. He has amassed nearly 1,500 runs in 54 matches for the franchise at an average of 37.47 and a strike rate of 144.41, with eight half-centuries to his name.

In the 2025 IPL season, Varma scored 343 runs in 16 games at an average of 31.18 and a strike rate of 138.30. However, the Mumbai Indians fell short of reaching the final after a heavy defeat to the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Qualifier 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Varma was controversially retired out during a match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Ekana International Stadium. It drew attention as Mumbai went on to lose that encounter.
