The Bargain Box Thrift Store in Greeley operated in affiliation with the National Assistance League for more than 50 years, supporting the Assistance League of Greeley.
At the beginning of this month, the Bargain Box broke off under a newly founded independent organization, Volunteers Enriching Weld.
Jo Eakins, the publicity chairperson for Volunteers Enriching Weld, said the change will allow the Bargain Box to serve the community more broadly. Under the Assistance League, the store had to follow certain guidelines, policies and other limitations.
Under Volunteers Enriching Weld, they can foster more opportunities with other entities, she said.
This change has no bearing on the store itself. The store will still serve the community like it has over the years at 1706 9th St.
“Really, the only thing that has changed as far as the Bargain Box goes is that independent organization, the governing organization,” Eakins said. “The Bargain Box remains the same.”
The store sells clothing, shoes and other items at low costs, in addition to supporting six community initiatives. Volunteers Enriching Weld will continue the initiatives previously provided by the Assistance League of Greeley, including offering single-parent scholarships to those looking to go back to school at the University of Northern Colorado or Aims Community College in Greeley. Their Warm Up Weld campaign donates coats and blankets during the winter to local homeless shelters.
The store put back more than $200,000 into the community during the 2023-24 fiscal year, Eakins said. The store’s staff is completely comprised of volunteers who keep busy checking out customers, greeting them and sorting through all the donations they receive weekly.
“I think it will be positive,” Eakins said of the new affiliation. “Our goal is to keep our presence within the community very strong and be a valuable presence in the community where people recognize our name, the Bargain Box, and can see the impact we’re making.”
Donations are accepted only during store hours, which are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday and noon to 3 p.m. Saturdays. Books, clothes, household items, shoes and various items are welcome.
