BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The historic Morgan-Manning House in Brockport, which suffered extensive damage from a fire in January, is undergoing reconstruction.
News10NBC got a look inside the home at the efforts to restore it to it’s former glory, which is expected to cost millions and take years to complete.
Scott Hunsinger, president of the board of the Morgan-Manning House, was present the day the house caught fire. “As the minutes and half hours and hours went by and smoke changed from black to white, we soon realized that it was a little bit more than we had bargained for,” Hunsinger said.
Hunsinger described walking through the house after the fire as “incredibly surreal.”
Paul Kimball, the project manager and former president of the board, explained the financial challenges of the restoration.
“We worked with the National Fire Adjusters, NFA, and they put together an estimate of $4.9 million. We’ve already spent to date $600,000. And we’re just getting to the point to start construction,” Kimball said. “The cost of asbestos removal was $225,000.”
Kimball attributed the high costs to the extensive work required. “It’s the magnitude of what has to be done. All these different rooms have all been gutted. They all had period-type trim on them. A lot of the trim was saved. Quite a bit of the trim is going to have to be recreated,” he said.
The house board aims to reopen in about two years, but say it could take four years or more before the public is welcomed back.
