Caltrans announced Tuesday it has postponed the temporary closure of the southbound Interstate 5 off-ramp known as the “Last U.S. Exit” near the U.S.-Mexico border in San Ysidro until next week.
The Camino de la Plaza off-ramp was set to close Tuesday at 9 p.m. for a pipe-installation project and reopen by 6 a.m. Wednesday.
According to a Caltrans statement, “a new (project) date is to be determined.”
Caltrans officials said that once the project is underway, nearby residents and businesses “can expect increased traffic on the detour route, construction noise and lights during this activity, including Occupational Safety and Health Administration required vehicle back-up alarms.”
“Crews will work to minimize noise and impacts to all nearby communities,” officials added. “The maintenance work schedule is subject to change due to weather, traffic incidents or other maintenance considerations.”
Camino de la Plaza is the last exit off Interstate 5 before the U.S.- Mexico border, and drivers who miss that are directed across the border into Mexico, according to Caltrans.
