With summer approaching and the sun shining over much of the UK, many people’s minds are turning to where to cool off in the heat.
And while there’s an abundance of chlorinated pools to choose from, for those who prefer to swim in salt water, you’ll find some showstopping options along the country’s coastline. From briny lidos to sea pools filled by the tide, here are seven of the best.
Squeezed between the sea and the South West Coast Path, on the edge of Brixham, Shoalstone was built in 1896 on the site of a natural rock pool, which was already a popular bathing spot. Fed by the English Channel, it’s one of the largest tidal swimming pools in the world at 53 metres long, and draws in more than 10,000 visitors each year. As well as offering swims with sea views, the pool has a snack kiosk and Shoals Restaurant, where you can order fish landed fresh at Brixham’s busy port. Pool entry is free but donations are welcome; open May-September.
Bude Sea Pool, Bude, Cornwall
Opened in 1930 to make sea-water swimming on Summerleaze Beach safer, Bude Sea Pool is replenished by the Atlantic, which washes over the man-made wall to fill it up during high tide. The cliffs behind provide some shelter from the elements and there are terraces on which to soak up the sun or admire the views out to sea. Run by a charity, it’s free to access and open all year.

During the Second World War, troops based nearby would visit here to swim and shower, but these days it’s more popular with families, who come for the paddling pool, water chute and weekly live music. Entry £10 for adults, £6.60 for children, under-sixes free; open May-September; heated.

Pools don’t get much more showstopping than Tinside Lido, a spacious semi-circle of sea water jutting out into Plymouth Sound. Opened in 1935, it lost its original tidal pools and diving boards during a renovation in the noughties, but it’s now Grade II listed and still home to a few water features as well as a sun terrace from which you can look out to sea. Entry £10 for adults, £8 children (concessions for Plymouth residents); open May-September.

Positioned on the Firth of Clyde, around 25 miles from Glasgow, Gourock might be best known for its ferry terminal, but it’s also home to a popular saltwater pool. Dating back to 1909, Gourock Oudoor Pool was renovated in Art Deco style in 1935, and with the building’s clean lines on one side and the water on the other, this place has a hint of the vintage cruise ship about it. The pool, heated to a balmy 29°C, has a diving board, while for smaller swimmers there’s a paddling pool. Prices vary (no bookings); open May-September.

While it’s fed by the tide, it’s usually slightly warmer than the open sea, although there’s a geothermal area that reaches 28-30°C, plus a sauna that was added last year. The Jubilee Café, meanwhile, has fantastic views over the pool and out to Mount’s Bay. Pool entry £4-7 for adults, £2.95-£5.50 for children, under-3s free; open April-October.

It may not be the most picturesque pool on the list, but this one at Walpole Bay is perhaps the largest, covering four acres and reaching depths of 6ft in some places. During high tide the walls become submerged, feeding the pool with saltwater, while springs underneath the beach add freshwater into the mix. Built in 1937, the pool is now Grade II listed, as is Margate’s other tidal pool, Marine Terrace – although swimming in the latter is no longer allowed due to safety concerns. Walpole Bay is free to use and open year round.
