The new cycle of the World Test Championship kicks off on Tuesday with the SL vs BAN Test series. The start of the WTC 25-27 coincides with the end of an era for Sri Lanka, with Angelo Matthews retiring. The Islanders have a bunch of new faces with Dhananjaya de Silva set to lead the transition starting June 17.
SL vs BAN: Debut for Lahiru Udara, Tharindu Rathnayake
All eyes will be on Angelo Mathews, who gears up for his final Test. Mathews’ announcement comes on the heels of Dimuth Karunaratne’s retirement, leaving Sri Lanka with multiple holes to fill. The Islanders have a settled batting combination regardless, with Dinesh Chandimal slotting at No.3. Pathum Nissanka, Kamindu Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva make up the rest of the batting lineup. Lahiru Udara, who has 16 FC tons to his name, is in line to fill Karunaratne’s shoes.
“The best thing we can do for Angelo is win the match for him and give him a good farewell. Unfortunately, we couldn’t do that for Dimuth. Personally, I’m hoping we can do it for Angelo,” de Silva said on the eve of the SL vs BAN 1st Test.
Tharindu Rathnayake is also set to make his Test debut in Galle. He is ambidextrous and has 337 FC wickets to his name. Sri Lanka would hope he adds a bit of support to Prabhath Jayasuriya. Akila Dananjaya could also play his first Test since 2019 after a recall to the side for the SL vs BAN series.
SL Playing XI: Lahiru Udara, Pathum Nissanka, Dinesh Chandimal, Angelo Mathews, Kamindu Mendis, Dhananjaya de Silva, Kusal Mendis, Tharindu Rathnayake, Akila Dananjaya/Kasun Rajitha, Prabhath Jayasuriya, Asitha Fernando.
SL vs BAN: Spin to win at Galle
Galle has been a spin-friendly venue, and Sri Lanka could well play three spinners. Asitha Fernando could well be the lone pacer, with a Jayasuriya-Dananjaya-Rathnayake spin axis to choke Bangladesh. Captain Dhananjaya de Silva also bowls some more than handy off-spin, adding to their spin tank. In that case, a place for Kasun Rajitha opens up. He featured for Essex in the County Championships, picking up a fifer in his last game.
