Cuttack: A growing diarrhea outbreak in Odisha has triggered serious public health concerns, with 27 patients admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
The patients—mostly referred from Jajpur and nearby areas—are being treated in a dedicated diarrhea ward, according to medical sources.
Tragically, one of the patients, identified as 43-year-old Basanta Barik from Sukinda in Jajpur district, succumbed to the disease early this morning.
The remaining patients are stable and undergoing treatment as per standard medical protocols, as per reports.
As the outbreak spreads to more districts, panic has gripped several parts of Odisha.
Earlier, 14 deaths have been attributed to the diarrheal infection.
Leader of the Opposition and Biju Janata Dal President Naveen Patnaik has slammed the state government for its lax response to the rising diarrheal cases in different parts of the state.
Raising concern over the outbreak, Naveen said that such a situation was not seen for many years which has now disrupted life in various districts.
The cholera outbreak is becoming severe in the districts of Jajpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Puri, Cuttack, and Keonjhar, and is also starting to spread to neighbouring districts.
In response to the alarming situation, a three-member central health team visited the Diarrhea Ward at SCB Medical College today to evaluate the condition of the affected patients and coordinate containment efforts.
