WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump has directed federal immigration officials to increase deportations in cities led by Democratic officials, in the wake of protests across the country against the president’s immigration policies.
News10NBC is working to learn if Rochester will be affected. In a social media post, Trump said Immigration and Customs Enforcement will expand efforts to detain and deport people living in the U.S. illegally in Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York.
The president called on ICE officials to “do all in their power to achieve the very important goal of delivering the single largest Mass Deportation Program in History.”
The White House announced that ICE officers would target at least 3,000 arrests a day, up from about 650 a day during the first five months of Trump’s second term.
The City of Rochester and the Trump administration have been at odds over immigration policies in the past. In April, the White House filed a lawsuit against the City of Rochester, seeking to change the policy that bans Rochester Police officers from helping federal immigration officers to make arrests. RPD officers are allowed to respond if immigration agents request backup.
The lawsuit comes after the White House threatened to pull federal grants from several local governments accused of hampering immigration enforcement. In response, Rochester has signed onto a lawsuit alleging that the president cannot override Congress and move money around in such a manner. Rochester has been a sanctuary city since 1986.
