Shubman Gill not ready? India star drops no-nonsense verdict on new Test captain

The 30-year-old India National Cricket Team left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav has dropped a blunt verdict on the newly-appointed Test captain Shubman Gill.

Kuldeep Yadav said that Shubman Gill has worked very hard under the previous India captains, and he has learned the art of leadership.

After Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket, the BCCI selection committee finalized Shubman Gill as the new skipper and the star wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant as vice-captain.

Shubman Gill has decent captaincy experience as he leads the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), but he doesn't have leadership experience in Test cricket.

He is set to make his captaincy debut in the Test series against England in their own backyard, and it will be a massive challenge for him. Gill has received good backing from former cricketers and his teammates since getting the captaincy, and the latest one to join the bandwagon is Kuldeep Yadav. Speaking to the media ahead of the Test series opener, Kuldeep Yadav said:

"Shubman knows how to lead a team. He has worked under the seniors in the last couple of years. In the last one year, you'd have seen him in a lot of discussions with Rohit bhai - not only in Tests but even in ODIs."

He's fully ready to lead us - Kuldeep Yadav

Kuldeep Yadav further revealed that Shubman Gill is actively involved with the team, and he possesses the same qualities as the previous India captains, which depicts that he is fully ready to lead. He stated:

"I'm sure he has learned a lot, but as a leader, from what I have seen so far, he's very motivated and he's been playing an active role in lifting the team.

"I have seen over the last three-four sessions that Shubman has the same qualities that I've seen in our previous leadership groups. He's fully ready to lead us."

Playing alongside Jadeja is such a great honour for me - Kuldeep Yadav

Kuldeep Yadav also made a big revelation about spending a lot of time with the veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, which has been a great learning for him. The left-arm wrist-spinner elaborated:

"Playing alongside Jadeja is such a great honour for me. Obviously, Jadeja and [R] Ashwin have been brilliant over the last few years. When I made my debut in India, they helped me a lot. And even now, we have been having a lot of chat about how to bowl to certain batters, given the way the England batters are batting at the moment.

"I'm actually spending a lot of time with him, not only on the field, but also outside as well. So it has actually helped me a lot in terms of tactics and the field placements, and he has given some tips as well."

Notably, Jadeja is expected to be a permanent member of the India playing XI in the matches against England, and Kuldeep Yadav can be slotted as the second spin-bowling option whenever conditions allow.
