Denver police they arrested 36 people Saturday night, most related to groups of protesters attempting to walk on to Interstate 25 after the “No Kings” demonstration near the state Capitol had dispersed.
DPD spokesperson Doug Schepman said the vast majority of people participating in the “No Kings” demonstration left after the event concluded at approximately 4 p.m. “Those marches and demonstrations were peaceful,” he said Sunday morning in an email. “DPD believes a separate group of people were protesting last night when the arrests occurred.”
Schepman said 14 people were arrested near the intersection of West Colfax and Osage Street, where a group of demonstrators attempted to enter Interstate 25 around 6:30 p.m. Police used smoke and fired pepper balls to disperse the group. He said people threw rocks and bottles at police that were waiting in the area to keep demonstrators off the highway.
Charges included interference with police authority, failure to obey a lawful order, unlawful throwing of projectiles and possession of a controlled substance.
Lexi Leman, who was hit in the knee by a pepper ball, told CPR News that the scene on West Colfax “kind of unfolded in a chaotic way.
“I’ve never seen anything unfold quite like this. The cops showing up in this way with riot gear just antagonizes them and makes people angry and makes people scared,” Leman said.

(Hart Van Denburg, CPR News)About three hours later, a group of protesters marched to the intersection of 20th and Blake streets. Schepman said officers were waiting there to prevent protesters from entering I-25 near Coors Field. “Numerous loudspeaker announcements were made telling protesters they would not be allowed to access the highway, and when officers observed some protesters picking up rocks, announcements were made declaring an unlawful assembly,” he said in the email.
When the demonstrators continued to move toward officers, police used pepper balls and smoke to push the people back, he said. “Protesters again threw rocks and objects at officers,” he added. “However, the group was dispersed from the area.”
The list of arrests Schepman included in the email showed five people were picked up in this area.
DPD managed five marches earlier Saturday near the state Capitol building and in the downtown area, he said. “Those marches were peaceful. There was one arrest of an adult male for obstruction of streets, which occurred in the area of Speer Boulevard and Wewatta Street after the arrestee refused to leave the roadway.”
Police also said a protester started a small fire on Lincoln Street near the state Capitol just after 10 p.m. Saturday. The fire quickly burned out and the protesters were chased away.
The people arrested ranged in age from a juvenile, who was cited and released, to a 44-year-old woman. Six people are listed in arrest records as “unverified” because they refused to provide their names or possibly because they provided false information prior to booking, Schepman said.
