ANTARCTICA: Iceberg, right ahead! For Sunnyvale’s Carla Klein, a close-up view of icebergs, penguins, seals and whales were among the highlights of a trip to Argentina and Antarctica earlier this year. Klein flew into Buenos Aires, made it to the Gran Melia Hotel inside the Iguazú National Park and took a speed boat right under Iguazu Falls. She then got on a six-day cruise between the Antarctic peninsula and the continent itself.
“One special feature of our itinerary was that we crossed the polar circle,” Klein said. “Our cruise included the ‘Polar Plunge,’ an opportunity to dive into the Antarctic waters. I passed on it, but a majority of people on the cruise did it.”
Klein particularly enjoyed a visit to Port Lockroy, the first base established by the British in 1944.
“The base is no longer active, but it is now a small museum and the most southerly operational post office in the world,” she said. “It was an incredible, once-in-a-lifetime trip!”
TRAVEL TIPS: The temperature was 32 degrees most days, “probably not as cold as you think,” Klein said. “Most cruises supply a heavy parka and waterproof boots. Book your cruise early as the small ships fill up quickly. I’d also recommend the excursion to Iguazu Falls.”
