Kevin Pietersen declares Aiden Markrams WTC Final knock the best innings by a South African in history

Legendary England National Cricket Team batsman Kevin Pietersen has showered ultimate praise on the South Africa National Cricket Team star batsman Aiden Markram following his heroics in the WTC Final 2025.

Kevin Pietersen stated that the knock played by Aiden Markram in the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 Final is the best-ever by a South African player in the history of Test cricket.

Markram had a horrible start in the ICC World Test Championship Final against Australia as in South Africa's first innings, he bagged a 6-ball duck, falling to Mitchell Starc in the first over.

The right-handed batter bounced back from the setback strongly in the second innings and showcased his real potential. He batted with a lot more confidence in the second innings and tackled the threat of the Aussie pace trio very well.

Conditions also got slightly easier to bat in the second innings, and Markram made the most of it by playing a knock for the ages. The opening batsman was involved in four crucial partnerships while chasing 282 in the WTC Final.

Markram added 61 runs with Wiaan Mulder, 147 runs with Temba Bavuma, 24 runs with Tristan Stubbs, and 35 runs with David Bedingham before falling in the 81st over.

Although Aiden Markram was unable to finish the game, he did enough to make sure that the Proteas ended their 27-year wait for an ICC trophy.

He finished his innings with a score of 136 runs off 207 balls, with 14 fours, and was awarded Player of the Match for his heroics.

Best innings any South African batter has ever played in Test match cricket - Kevin Pietersen on Aiden Markram

Speaking after the match, the England batting great Kevin Pietersen lauded Aiden Markram and hailed his knock as the best innings by a South African batter in Test cricket.

“Probably the best innings any South African batter has ever played in Test match cricket. It might not go down as the most attacking or entertaining if you look back at South Africa’s Test history — but when you factor in the expectation, the stage, and the pressure after failing in the first innings, it was extraordinary,” Pietersen said on JioHotstar.

“Whether you’re a batter or a bowler, when your country is counting on you and you have to deliver — that pressure is immense. He lost Rickelton early, yet still went on to produce something truly magnificent. It’s hard to even describe the kind of pressure he was under,” he added.

Aiden is a big-match player - Kagiso Rabada

Premier pacer Kagiso Rabada, who also played a key role in South Africa's WTC Final win, said that Aiden Markram is a big-match player and he batted exceptionally well against the famed Aussie bowling unit.

“Aiden is a big-match player. The way he held his ground with such resolve — it was remarkable to watch. His presence, the way he dominated his space, and stuck to his game plan without wavering was just brilliant.

"You still had to bat really well on that pitch — it wasn’t one where you could afford to be loose. They were setting off-side traps, leg-side traps, but he navigated all of it throughout his innings,” Rabada said.
