Handful of Section V teams win State Championships

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) – Saturday was a very kind one to the many Section V teams competing in State Championship games across different spring sports.

In girl’s lacrosse, it was a 2-for-2 sweep. Victor outlasted Garden City, 12-9, to capture their fourth straight State Championship. For the Blue Devils’ seniors, it was a sweep, winning a championship all four years of school.

For Penfield girl’s lacrosse, it was a new feeling. The Patriots beat Suffern, 9-3, for the first ever State Championship in program history.

On the boy’s side, Penn Yan came from behind against Chenango Forks to win the Class D State Championship. Coming back from behind in the second half had been the theme throughout the State Tournament as the Mustangs now have two championships in program history.

Unfortunately, Canandaigua couldn’t keep the perfect streak going. They were up against a tough Garden City program, falling short.

On the diamond, Pittsford Mendon’s wild run continued with a shutout victory over Maine-Endwell. The Vikings had never one a State Championship and found a way to ride their pitching for the first in program history.

And on the softball field, 11 runs paced Bloomfield to a shutout win over Tuckahoe, as the Bombers claimed the Class D title.

Also representing Section V was Haverling, who fell 4-0 to Chatham in the Class B final.
