Shreyas Iyer drops backstabbing bombshell after losing 2 finals as captain within 10 days

Shreyas Iyer’s struggle with finals seems to be turning into an unfortunate trend. After facing a heartbreaking loss with Punjab Kings in the IPL 2025 final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Shreyas Iyer has yet again found himself on the losing side, and this time in the Mumbai T20 League.

Leading SoBo Mumbai Falcons in the Mumbai T20 League, Iyer had high hopes of lifting the trophy, but his team fell short in the final against the Mumbai South Central Maratha Royals on Thursday, June 12. Iyer failed to deliver in the title clash, just like his poor outing in the IPL 2025 finals.

Despite being one of the most experienced batters, Iyer couldn’t deliver when it mattered the most, managing only 12 off 17 balls, as Mumbai South Central Maratha Royals crushed SoBo Mumbai Falcons’ title dreams by five wickets at the Wankhede Stadium.

The Indian middle-order batter failed to perform in both high-pressure contests and faced defeats in the two finals within 10 days. Earlier this month, Punjab Kings, led by Iyer, suffered a heartbreaking defeat of six runs in the IPL 2025 final against RCB and missed the chance to lift their maiden title.

After facing yet another final defeat, Shreyas Iyer said that he didn’t want to blame anyone for the loss. The SoBo Mumbai Falcons captain praised his team’s overall performance and said that it would be unfair to point fingers and called such blame games “backstabbing.”

Don't want to pinpoint any particular incident: Shreyas Iyer on Mumbai T20 League Final loss

Shreyas Iyer said after the loss, “Don't want to pinpoint any particular incident. Overall, the boys were brilliant with their efforts. We lost just one game en route to the final. Just a one-off game where you can't single out anyone—it's basically backstabbing, and I don't enjoy that.”

The captain admitted the loss was painful but hoped his players would return stronger in the next edition of the Mumbai T20 League. He said the experience would give them extra motivation and confidence, and they should feel proud of their journey, as they lost only one game this season.

Iyer signed off by saying, “We've learned a lot. It's pretty common to feel dejected after a final loss. It must hurt them. But when they come back next year, they'll have that extra motivation and confidence. They should be proud of their effort.”

    Mumbai T20 League Final Highlight

Speaking about the Mumbai T20 League final, SoBo Mumbai Falcons struggled while batting first, as they could manage only 157 runs on the board. Mayuresh Tandel was the standout performer with a solid fifty, while Harsh Aghav played another handy knock of 45 runs.

Iyer disappointed his team with just 12 runs from 17 balls, and Angkrish Raghuvanshi also failed to impress, scoring only 7 runs off 12 balls in the summit clash. Chasing the target, Chinmay Rajesh Sutar led the Mumbai South Central Maratha Royals from the front with a composed 53.

Apart from Sutar, Awais Khan Naushad chipped in with a valuable 38. They chased down the target with four balls to spare and defeated Iyer’s team by five wickets to lift the trophy.
