PENFIELD, N.Y. – A proposed solar project in Penfield is facing opposition from local residents. News10NBC’s Marsha Augustin attended the town planning board meeting where the developer and neighbors voiced their opinions on the project. Dozens of residents expressed concerns about the construction and installation of the solar project, which would be operated by Northrup Penfield Solar LLC.
Many neighbors whose homes back directly onto the project area said they are not against solar energy but are worried about the potential negative impacts on their quality of life, greenspace, and property values.
A petition against the project has been signed by 93% of households adjacent to the proposed site, Kelley Nolan, a neighbor who organized it said.
“When its right in your backyard and you have trucks and maintenance and equipment back there and glare. I have two small children so I need to make sure I do my research and due diligence and express my concerns” Kelley Nolan said.
The developers, Ella DeMayo with GreenSpark Solar and Matt Vanderbrook, director of origination at GreenSpark Solar, are seeking site approval and a permit for the construction and operation of a ground-mounted solar array system at 1234 and 1250 Northrup Road.
Developers with this solar energy project there will be a 5-10% savings for customers.
The solar array would be interconnected to the RG&E utility grid. Developers said the solar project could power 710 households. Those in favor of the project spoke about the benefits it could bring.
“It’s a step forward in our community. New York State says sets some pretty ambitious goals in the coming years to electrify and this is part of our contribution to that,” Tim Murphy said.
The developer anticipates obtaining all regulatory approvals in six to nine months. If approved, construction could begin by 2027, taking an additional six to nine months.
