ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A group of students at Edison Tech shared their documentary ‘In Silence of Memory, We Speak’ at The Theatre at Innovation Square on Thursday.
The 15-minute student-produced documentary aims to explore the human and societal impact of Alzheimer’s disease. The film puts emphasis on the disproportionate effects the disease has on Black and Brown communities across the United States.
Members of the Alzheimer’s Association of Rochester and the Finger Lakes Region volunteered to help the filmmakers understand Alzheimer’s and prepare them to tell their story. The documentary includes interviews with caregivers, community leaders and healthcare professionals.
“I learned that you can’t judge nobody by their cover because you don’t know what they’re going through,” said Hawa Ali, a sophomore at Edison Tech. “What I took from this project is that there’s a lot that we don’t see, and everything is behind closed doors, so being able to open the door and actually see what’s going on is amazing…”
The documentary will be submitted for consideration in the 2025 Rochester Teen Film Festival, an international competition sponsored by WXXI Public Media and the Little Theatre. The event is free and open to the public and will be held August 7.
