Daniel Cormier has revealed Ben Askren is now home from hospital after his battle with several health conditions.
Askren’s wife Amy gave a worrying health update which revealed the MMA legend had been hospitalised with severe pneumonia.
The UFC community rallied around Askren and sent their well wishes during the recent UFC 316 pay-per-view headlined by Merab Dvalishvili’s victory over Sean O’Malley when the news broke.
But UFC legend Daniel Cormier has revealed his battle with ill health will continue at home.
He said: “Ben Askren, our good friend from ‘Funky and the Champ’, is having a hard time.
“That night that we did the last episode of ‘Funky and the Champ’, Ben was complaining about some issues.
“He had some infections. He had a really tough time when he went to that convention in Vegas, he was stuck there for a while.
“I wanna report to you guys that he’s now back home in Wisconsin. He’s with his family, his beautiful wife, Amy.
“Everybody is just kind of praying that Ben gets better and we can start moving forward with life for Ben.
“It’s so sad. I don’t know how things like this happen to someone who is so good because Ben Askren is a good guy.
“Pray for Amy, guys. Pray for the kids. Ben, we love you, buddy. We are constantly thinking about him every single day.
“I cannot wait for the next ‘Funky and the Champ’ because we’ll talk about that so much more.”
Cormier has sent prayers to Askren as he continues his recoveryGetty‘Funky’ had a three-fight career in the UFC where he was primarily known for his elite wrestling ability.
The American lost two out of his three fights, but made his UFC debut with a sensational win over Robbie Lawler.
He was then victim of one of the promotion’s most famous KOs, as Jorge Masvidal flattened him in July 2019.
And his last appearance in the octagon came in October of that year, where he was submitted by Demian Maia.
Despite taking a step away from the UFC, it wasn’t the end of Askren’s time in combat sports.
He famously fought Jake Paul in a high-profile boxing fight, but was again brutally KO’d in just one round of their 2021 clash.
Askren is a hugely respected fighter and member of the MMA communityGettyAskren is now retired and is 40-years-old, playing a regular analyst to the goings on in MMA.
He previously got himself into sensational shape and issued a call-out to a rematch with Masvidal, but a comeback is unlikely.
