A 26-year-old man who police say escaped a halfway house in Pueblo was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after barricading himself inside a Greeley home for roughly five hours Monday afternoon.
The man was serving a sentence for first-degree assault at a Department of Youth Corrections Halfway House and fled after he was named as a suspect in a stabbing two weeks ago, according to a Greeley Police Department news release.
Greeley police went to his father’s house in the 2100 block of 7th Avenue around noon after the members of the Colorado Department of Corrections’ Parole Fugitive Division tracked the man there.
The man fled inside the home when police arrived, according to the release. Police say several occupants — including children — left, leaving him alone inside. Officials sent out an emergency alert at 1:40 p.m. to ask neighbors to stay inside and advised the public to stay away in a 2:10 p.m. Facebook post.
After getting a warrant, Greeley’s SWAT team entered the house and found the man dead in the basement from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The emergency alert was canceled just after 5 p.m., according to the release.
The department said no further details will be released on Wednesday, citing the active investigation.
Police ask anyone with information on the case to contact Detective Max Moree at [email protected] or 970-350-9549.
The Weld County Coroner will release the man’s name after notifying his next of kin.
