Evelyn Bay is an idyllic coastal town in Tasmania which harbours a deadly secret.
Netflix’s new mini-series, The Survivors, chronicles the story of this Australian town and its inhabitants who are haunted by a traumatic past.
Based on the bestselling novel by Jane Harper, the series has been created by Tony Ayres.
He said: “I often describe the show as a Trojan horse. It’s a family melodrama disguised as a murder mystery.
“Because the things that are really at its heart are things like a son wanting his mother’s love and the mother who just cannot afford to give it because her whole world might fall apart.”
Starring Charlie Vickers and Yerhin Ha, it explores the themes of family and loss and the stories that we tell each other to understand loss.

The Survivors is about the fictional small seaside town of Evelyn Bay in Tasmania.
It’s a tight-knit community where everyone knows each other by name and knows all their secrets – or so it seems.
Set in the dramatic landscape of towering cliffs, crashing waves and breathtaking natural beauty, Evelyn Bay appears to be the perfect idyll.
But it is a small town haunted by a traumatic past.
Fifteen years ago, a storm devastated the coastal town and took the lives of three young people: Kieran Elliott’s older brother Finn, Mia’s best friend Gabby, and Finn’s friend Toby.
Burdened by guilt, Kieran and Mia escaped and left Evelyn Bay and reconnected in Sydney.
When it emerges Kieran’s father has dementia, they return to the town with their young family and old feelings of guilt resurface.
Then the body of a young woman is found washed up on the beach.
And the subsequent investigation into this death threatens to reveal long-held secrets in the town, the truth about the missing girl and a killer in their midst.

Charlie Vickers stars as Kieran Elliott, who returns to Evelyn Bay with his young family.
Australian actor Vickers, 32, rose to prominence as Guglielmo Pazzi in the Netflix drama Medici.
He starred as Sauron in the television version of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. And he played Clem Hart in The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart.
Yerin Ha
Yerin Ha is Mia Chang in The Survivors (Photo: Aedan O’Donnell/Netflix)Yerin Ha plays Mia Chang, who lost her best friend Gabby in an apparent drowning and is now in a relationship with Kieran Elliott.
The Australian actress, 27, first appeared on television in Reef Break. She has gone on to star in Halo, Troppo, Bad Behaviour and Dune: Prophecy.
She is set to appear in the fourth series of Bridgerton as Sophie Baek, the love interest of Benedict Bridgerton.

Robyn Malcom is Verity Elliott, the mother of Kieran and Finn, who still lives in Evelyn Bay.
New Zealand-born actress Malcolm, 60, rose to fame in the soap opera Shortland Street. She has since starred in major films such as The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, The Lovely Bones, Drift and Hostiles.
On television, she has had leading roles in Outrageous Fortune, Top of the Lake, Agent Anna, Upper Middle Bogan, The Code, The Outpost and After The Party.
Damien Garvey

The veteran Australian actor and musician, 65, has starred in films such as The Marine, Daybreakers, Beauty and the Beast, Drive Hard, Ride Like A Girl and Love and Monsters.
He has also appeared as Dr. Jim Cunningham in the television series McLeod’s Daughters, Owen in East of Everything, Graham ‘Chook’ Fowler in Underbelly, Cal McGregor in Rake and Stan in Jack Irish, Bryan Nichols in Harrow and Director Crawley in Nautilius.

There are six episodes of the mini-series The Survivors, which were all released on Netflix on Friday, 6 June.
