How Samsungs Smartwatch Helped Me Navigate My Chronic Illness

When it comes to my health, the more I know, the better. I'm the type of person who always wants to see the numbers on my blood pressure reading, just in case. I've been known to carry a pulse oximeter in my bag, order my own bloodwork, and even test for 100 different biomarkers . . . you know, just for fun. So when I had the chance to try Samsung's Galaxy Watch7 ($200, previously $300), I jumped at the opportunity to learn that much more.

I know some people exclusively use these kinds of tech accessories for fitness tracking, but as a person with a chronic illness, I approached the Samsung watch with different intentions. To me, the watch felt more like an interactive health hub, chock-full of accessible data.

Using the watch (and a compatible Samsung phone), I was able to check my daily energy score, see my current activity levels, identify sleep patterns, and track my stress - and that's just to name a few. By holding my fingers to the side of the watch, I was also able to learn about my body composition, a metric I'd never previously considered.

All of that data may seem overwhelming, and admittedly, it was a little daunting at first. But the information serves an important purpose. Read on to see exactly how the watch worked for me, including how it helped me through a difficult flare-up.

My Experience With the Galaxy Watch7

My first week with the watch, I was in high spirits. I hadn't had a flare-up in months, and the Samsung watch validated that I was staying active and putting in some hard work at the gym. The watch enables you to track specific workouts (running, yoga, strength training, etc.) so you're getting the most accurate data possible; all you have to do is tap the specific exercise you'd like to record, and hit "start." With easy access to so many different metrics, I felt like I was being more mindful of my health and wellness in general, getting up more frequently to try to hit my step goals for the day.

Unfortunately, the next week took a bit of a turn. I had been pleasantly surprised to learn that my sleep score was on the high side (humble brag), but despite following my usual sleep schedule, the watch suddenly alerted me that my quality of sleep was off. "Your sleeping heart rate variability has deviated from its standard level, likely due to stress," I was told in a longer description on the Samsung Health app. This lowered my morning energy score by a whole 19 points.

"Consider taking time today to rest and engage in stress-relieving activities," the app told me. Given that stress is a common trigger for my flare-ups, I wondered if the watch had actually helped predict an oncoming health issue. I can't say for certain whether that was the case, but the alert did end up marking the beginning of a 14-day flare.

    What I Liked

I was a big fan of Samsung's energy scores in general. For many people with chronic illnesses, pacing (or strategically regulating energy to prevent a flare-up) is hugely important. Knowing whether or not I had a little extra energy to spare definitely helped me make smarter decisions about my health throughout the week.

I was also pleasantly surprised by my sleep score. I don't claim to be a perfect sleeper, but when you already know that factors like sleep and stress play a large role in your personal health, it feels empowering to be able to keep a close eye on them. And, as previously mentioned, the watch gave me an alert when something looked off, letting me know that it was time to slow down and get some extra rest (which is sometimes hard for me to do on my own). Thanks to the watch, I didn't feel as guilty for calling it an early night, or sleeping in a little later.

Another big plus is that the smartwatch will give you personalized wellness tips. For instance, in the days following my flare-up, I attended an hour-long yoga class, which was more physical activity than I had done in days. In the moment, the low-impact movement felt good, but my watch quickly reminded me that it would still be a good idea to rest the next day, since I hadn't exercised in a while.

    What to Consider

As with any fitness tracker, some of the data available via the Galaxy Watch7 - while impressive - can also feel a little triggering. I have a complicated relationship with diet and exercise, so being able to test my body composition every morning (it was quite literally at my fingertips) felt like a bit of a slippery slope. But ultimately, everyone is different, and what sparks some anxiety within me, might not be an issue for someone else.

At $200, the watch is also an investment - albeit more affordable than some of its competitors. In my opinion, if you're someone that wants to know themselves better, or you'd like some help navigating your own personal wellness (I can tell you it's not always easy), this watch can do a lot of the heavy lifting for you.

    Additional Details

The watch comes in two different colorways: green and cream. The watch comes in two different sizes: 40mm ($200) and 44mm ($230). The Galaxy Watch7 is only compatible with Android OS.
