ALBANY, N.Y. — The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles has launched a new online form to file complaints against auto repair shops, car dealers, and inspection stations.
The tool aims to make it simpler to file complaints and includes a platform to upload documents. You can access the form here. Once you submit a form, you’ll get a confirmation email from the DMV.
Last year, over 470 customers got refunds or had vehicle repair costs covered, totaling $1.48 million, as a result of DMV investigations. Some of the issues included poor quality vehicle repairs, selling vehicles without disclosing significant defects to the buyer, charging consumers for repairs that were never completed, or charging consumers for repairs they didn’t need.
The DMV has these tips for consumers who think they might have a complaint:
Bring complaints to the attention of the repair shop or dealership management right away. Keep a record of all contacts with the repair shop or dealer about the vehicle and any repairs or adjustments made. Keep copies of all work orders and invoices as proof of attempts to resolve the problem. If the complaint concerns a repair, file a formal complaint with the Department of Motor Vehicles within 90 days or 3,000 miles of the repair, whichever comes first.State DMV launches online form to file complaints against auto shops WHEC.com.
