Austal USA announced Monday that the future USNS Point Loma, an expeditionary fast transport vessel, has completed acceptance trials and is ready for delivery to the Navy.
The ship is the second naval vessel to bear the seaside San Diego community’s name. The first was a deep submergence support ship that was decommissioned in 1993.
The Point Loma is a Flight II vessel in the Spearhead class, which are 338-foot-long aluminum catamarans with medical facilities, a flight deck for helicopters and a loading ramp for vehicles. They can reach speeds of over 50 mph.
The ships are designed for support regular and special forces in what the Navy terms “austere and contested operating environments,” such as island warfare in the Pacific Ocean.
“I am excited for the hard-working Austal USA shipbuilding team who are responsible for the successful achievement of these trials,” said Austal’s Dave Growden. “Point Loma is headed toward her final milestone — delivery.”
Austal has delivered fourteen of the transports and has two more, both Flight II versions, under construction.
