Colorado coach Deion Sanders has been away from the program as he deals with an unspecified illness, according to a report.
Per a report from USA Today, Sanders is at his estate in Clayton, Texas, as he recovers. He has not been present at Colorado’s annual summer football camps in Boulder — something he did participate in during his first 2 summers as Colorado’s head football coach.
Sanders’ son, Deion Sanders Jr., briefly addressed his father’s health during a YouTube livestream on Sunday.
“He’ll tell y’all soon enough what he going through, what he went through,” Sanders Jr. said, via USA Today.
It’s not yet clear when coach Prime will be able to return to Boulder.
“When we get back to Boulder, I don’t know,” Sanders Jr. added. “I’m waiting until my dad leaves. When he leaves, then I’ll go. Until then, I’m going to sit here with him.”
Sanders was scheduled to be the keynote speaker at the annual Sickle Cell Disease Research and Education Symposium in Florida on Sunday. However, the foundation announced on social media that he had to cancel his appearance due to an “unavoidable last-minute scheduling change.”
Sanders has endured health issues before. When he was the head coach at Jackson State, Sanders had 2 toes amputated on his left foot due to a blood clotting issue. It’s unclear if this illness is related to blood clots or another issue.
Colorado will open the 2025 season against Georgia Tech on Aug. 29.
