On June 2, the star South Africa National Cricket Team wicketkeeper-batsman Heinrich Klaasen dropped a bomb by announcing his retirement from international cricket at the age of 33.
Klaasen's retirement stunned the cricket world as he is currently at the peak of his powers and has a lot of cricket left in him. He ended his international career after playing four Tests, 60 ODIs, and 58 T20Is, and now he looks to focus on his T20 league future.
Klaasen's final outing in the South Africa National Cricket Team jersey came during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final against the New Zealand National Cricket Team in Lahore in March.
He established himself as one of the most dangerous batters in white-ball cricket and exited ODI cricket with one of the highest career strike rates by any player.
Klaasen is in high demand across the T20 leagues worldwide, and reportedly, he is looking to play cricket for four more years before quitting cricket entirely.
We're excited to have Klaasie back at the helm - Venugopal Rao
General Manager of Cricket Operations at Seattle Orcas, Venugopal Rao, said that they are excited to see Heinrich Klaasen continue as team captain for the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025. In a statement released by the franchise, he said:
"We're excited to have Klaasie back at the helm. He’s a natural leader with a fierce will to win and has consistently delivered — both individually and as part of successful teams — in some of the world’s most competitive T20 leagues. His presence lifts the entire squad, especially the younger players. And with Harmeet stepping in as his deputy, we have a leadership duo that blends international pedigree with local insight — a combination that can truly elevate this team.”
It’s an honor to lead the Seattle Orcas - Heinrich Klaasen
Meanwhile, Heinrich Klaasen said that he is honoured to be retained as the Seattle Orcas skipper and is looking forward to helping his team do something special in MLC 2025.
“It’s an honor to lead the Seattle Orcas. I’ve watched the rise of MLC closely, and I’m incredibly proud to be a part of this journey. We’ve got a fantastic group of players, passionate fans, and big ambitions — I can’t wait to help turn things around this season," Heinrich Klaasen said.
“With the talent we’ve got and the energy around this team, I truly believe we can do something special this year," he added
Klaasen's deputy, Harmeet Singh, is also delighted to be a part of the leadership group. He said:
“It’s a privilege to be named vice-captain of the Orcas. We’ve got a great mix of experience and emerging talent — I’m looking forward to backing Klaasie and doing everything I can to help this team lift the trophy.”
Seattle Orcas had an awful campaign in MLC 2024 as they won just one out of seven matches and finished at the bottom of the points table. However, in 2023, they had a stellar campaign, finishing at the No.1 spot, but they lost the final to MI New York.
