Jorge Luiz Gonzalez looked destined for a fruitful professional boxing career when he turned over in 1991.

The Havana puncher was 6ft 7ins tall, had an 82-inch reach, and possessed an impressive 220-13 amateur record.

During his vested days, Gonzalez won gold at the 1983 and 1987 Pan American Games and defeated Lennox Lewis, Riddick Bowe, and three-time Olympic gold medallist Teofilo Stevenson.

Unlike many of the great Cubans from his era, Gonzalez was able to escape the clutches of his country’s communist regime to embark on a professional career in the United States.

Gonzalez got off to a flying start, winning his first 23 fights – 22 of which came inside the distance.

His biggest victory up to that point had been a sustained beating of ageing former world title challenger Renaldo Snipes in 1993.

Two years later, he was handed the opportunity to fight for the then lightly regarded WBO heavyweight title against amateur rival Bowe.

There was bad blood in the build-up, and it quickly turned physical.

At one of their pre-fight press conferences, Gonzalez pushed Bowe’s manager, sparking a heated confrontation.

Both men hurled ice at each other as a sea of bodies rushed in to separate the pair before a mass brawl erupted.

When they eventually met in the ring, Gonzalez proved no match for Bowe as ‘Big Daddy’ exacted his sweet revenge at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena with a punishing performance.

Bowe battered Gonzalez from pillar to post for six rounds before rendering his bitter enemy unconscious with a dynamite right hand.

In the years that followed the devastating defeat, Gonzalez traded wins and losses with varying levels of opposition.

He managed to string together a few wins over lower-calibre fighters, but every time he stepped up in levels, he was found out.

Gonzalez lost four of his next five fights to Tim Witherspoon, Ross Puritty, Michael Grant, and Paea Wolfgramm.

He then had a mini-resurgence before ending his career with a three-fight skid.

The Cuban technician subsequently hung up his gloves in 2002 with a 31-8 record.

Rather than being remembered for his achievements, he will stick out in most fans’ minds for his bizarre haircut.

GettyNowadays, his haircut gets talked about more than he does[/caption]

Gonzalez sported what can only be described as a reverse mullet.

While the top of his head was completely shaved, he left a tuft of flowing hair at the back, which flicked around like a horse’s tail every time he absorbed a decent shot.
