AN extreme weather warning forced ESPN to consider producing Game 2 of the NBA Finals remotely.
The broadcaster is responsible for coverage of the Finals, which is also being shown on ABC.
Their crew was in Oklahoma City for most of last week, with Games 1 and 2 both taking place at Paycom Center.
Ahead of last night’s game, OKC was rocked by a tornado warning.
Per The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand, ESPN considered the possibility of having to produce the game between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Indiana Pacers remotely.
In this set-up, Mike Breen and analysts Doris Burke and Richard Jefferson would have remained courtside.
The major change would have been in not being able to use the production trucks situated outside the arena.
In this scenario, ESPN would have had to control proceedings from a remote location.
This likely would have been from either a studio in Los Angeles, or ESPN headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut.
Fortunately, the production was able to go ahead as originally planned.
So ESPN did not have to fall back on their contingency plan.
Oklahoma City went on to tie the series at 1-1.
The Pacers had stolen Game 1 on the road courtesy of Tyrese Haliburton’s last-gasp heroics.
But the Thunder shut the door on a repeat act with a dominant performance.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander produced a brilliant display – contributing 34 points from 21 shots, along with eight assists, five rebounds and four steals.
Alex Caruso and Aaron Wiggins added 20 and 18 points from the bench respectively.
After the game, Haliburton admitted that he needs to find a way to start games better during this series.
“This is who they are defensively,” the Team USA point guard said.
“They got a lot of different guys who can guard the ball, fly around.
“I just got to figure out how to be better earlier in games.
“Kudos to them, they’re a great defensive team. But [I will] watch the film, see where I can get better.”
The two teams will meet again in Indiana in Game 3 on Wednesday night.
