Diamondbacks blown out in 13-1 drubbing to Reds, Ryne Nelson struggles in start

The Diamondbacks lost twice in one day, capped off by a severely one-sided 13-1 loss to the Reds in the Queen City on Saturday.

Rain threatened to delay the game for the second straight day but subsided around the fourth inning.

Eugenio Suarez was the only bright spot for the D-backs, hitting his 100th home run at Great American Ballpark. He now ranks fourth in terms of home runs hit in that ballpark behind long-time Reds players Joey Votto, Jay Bruce and Brandon Phillips.

Suarez, who was 2-for-4 on the day with the one home run, brought his career home run total to 293, only seven homers away from 300.

Starter Ryne Nelson had one of his worst outings of the year, with only three innings pitched, giving up seven earned runs along with four hits on four walks. Nelson was pulled from the game before the fourth inning for reliever Kendall Graveman, who was not much better in relief.

Graveman entered the game in the fourth and immediately got shelled. The righty gave up six earned runs on five hits and two walks and a grand slam to former Dodgers second baseman Gavin Lux.

Things got so bad for the D-backs, that backup catcher Jose Herrera came in to pitch the eighth inning to close out the game.

Newly called up Christian Montes de Oca made his major league debut, providing the only pitching bright spot the D-backs had today.

Montes de Oca pitched 2.2 innings without giving up a hit and walking one while striking out two in mop-up duty, as the contest was long over before he entered.
