The upcoming series between India and England will have a newly renamed trophy to honor two legendary cricketers, Sachin Tendulkar and James Anderson, in Test cricket. However, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi’s legacy will continue to be associated with the series despite the change in the trophy name.
The Pataudi Trophy was introduced in 2007 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the inaugural Test match between India and England, which took place at Lord’s in 1932. Team India, led by legendary cricketer Rahul Dravid, secured a comfortable 1-0 win in a three-match Test series on English soil.
According to a BBC report, the newly named Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy will be unveiled ahead of the Test series, which begins on June 20 in Leeds. It will take place at Lord’s during the World Test Championship final on June 11, with both Sachin Tendulkar and James Anderson likely to be present.
Tendulkar and Anderson faced each other in 14 Tests between 2006 and 2012. While Tendulkar scored 208 runs during those encounters, Anderson dismissed him nine times — the most by any bowler in Tendulkar’s Test career.
India and England have contested the Pataudi Trophy during the Test series in England. The Men in Blue won the inaugural edition, while England claimed it in 2011, 2014, and 2018.
The Pataudi Name Will Remain Associated with the England-India Series
Boria Majumdar said that the trophy is expected to be the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, not Tendulkar-Anderson. However, Majumdar added that the legacy of Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi is not being removed from the India-England Test series.
"There's been quite a debate about the renaming of the Pataudi Trophy to the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. It's not the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy — it will be the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, from what I know. But that's not the news. The Pataudi name is not being dissociated from the series," Boria said.

ECB and BCCI Say Trophy Renaming Not Meant to Disrespect Pataudi Legacy
Boria Majumdar said that the BCCI and ECB have no intention of disrespecting the Pataudi family's legacy with the renaming of the trophy. He added that the trophy will have a new name, but the Pataudi name will still be associated with the India-England Test series.
"The idea of the ECB and the BCCI is not to show any disrespect to the Pataudi family or their legacy. From what I understand, the Pataudi legacy and name will continue to be associated with the series, while only the trophy is being renamed," Boria added.
"This is a blend of tradition and modernity. While the legacy of the Pataudis—like Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi, who played for two countries, and Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, former India captain who also played for Sussex—continues, the change aims to build a cultural bridge," he continued.
Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi played for both England and India during the 1930s and 1940s. His son, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, later became a legendary figure in Indian cricket, leading the national team in 40 Tests in the 1960s and 70s.
England currently holds the trophy, having drawn the most recent series 2–2. The series began in 2021 and concluded in 2022 after being delayed due to Covid-19.
