I’m $56million All-Pro receiver banned from alcohol, strip clubs and forced to hire security team in brutal contract

Dez Bryant was selected by the Dallas Cowboys with the 24th overall pick of the 2010 NFL Draft.

The wideout — a star for the Oklahoma State Cowboys — was in the running for the Heisman Trophy in 2009 until landing a suspension.

Bryant was found to have lied to the NCAA about a visit to NFL icon Deion Sanders‘ home.

He missed the rest of the season having claimed 323 receiving yards, four receiving touchdowns, and a punt return score in just three games.

Character concerns saw the Denver Broncos opt for Demaryius Thomas instead and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones traded up to get his man.

He signed a five-year deal worth $12 million and in a sign of how highly regarded he was in Dallas, was handed the the No. 88 jersey made famous by Hall of Famers and Cowboys legends Michael Irvin and Drew Pearson.

After showing promise as a rookie, Bryant earned a full-time role in his sophomore season and finished with 928 yards and nine scores.

But while things were going well on the field, he was asked to agree to a strict code of conduct to clean up his act off it.

Ahead of the 2012 season, Bryant and his adviser David Wells hashed out a deal in consultation with team officials.

Among the conditions were a midnight curfew, no alcohol, and no strip clubs.

Bryant was allowed to attend nightclubs if they were approved by the Cowboys and he was accompanied by a security team.

Cameras were placed inside the superstar’s home to monitor comings and goings.

He also agreed to attend weekly counseling sessions, employ a rotating team of security guards so one could be with him at all times and drive him to practices, games and team functions.

The cost of the security team came to $17,000 a month, which was deducted from his contract.

This was all outlined in a four-page agreement dubbed ‘The Dez Rules’ that was designed to cover the rest of the rookie’s deal.

It came about after Bryant was accused of an alleged assault on his mother Angela and charged with a Class A misdemeanor by the police department of DeSoto, Texas.

The charges were dropped if exchange for and agreement to attend counselling sessions and stay out of trouble for a year, per ESPN.

In 2014, Jones was asked if Bryant’s good behaviour would see the agreement parked.

“He doesn’t need to drop his guard,” the owner replied. “In some respect, none of us do.”

While under the ‘Dez Rules’, Bryant enjoyed the best three seasons of his career, making the Pro Bowl in 2013 and 2014, when he was named a First-Team All-Pro — his only nod.

He stayed out of trouble off the field but, ironically, did find some on it.

The Texan got into it with tight end Jason Witten during a loss to the Detroit Lions and left the field before the game was over in another defeat to the Green Bay Packers.

Bryant earned a $70 million contract, including $45 million of guarantees, in 2015 but fractured his foot in the season-opener.

That season he sold more merchandise than any non-quarterback in the entire NFL — Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Russell Wilson, and Aaron Rodgers were the only players ahead of him.

Dak Prescott arrived in 2016 and earned Bryant his third and final Pro Bowl selection before helping him overtake Bob Hayes’ franchise record with 73 receiving touchdowns in 2018.

After being released, the 6ft 2in, 220-pound pass-catcher joined the New Orleans Saints but an Achilles tear ended his season before he played a game.

Bryant sat out the 2019 season and briefly returned with the Baltimore Ravens.

While not officially retired, the 36-year-old’s NFL career looks done as he has not been on a roster since 2020.

Bryant earned around $56 million over a career that saw him rack up 537 catches for 7,506 yards and 77 touchdowns.

But for injury, those numbers could have been a lot higher.
