Lawrence Okolie has suggested a showdown with Dillian Whyte in August is certainly on the table.
Iconic British heavyweight Whyte was due to get back into the ring this weekend on the undercard of Fabio Wardley vs Justis Huni.
But the fight was cancelled at short notice with Whyte forced to withdraw, as a much bigger opportunity for this summer has emerged.
It is currently unclear what that option is, but he has been inundated with call-outs including from bitter rival Okolie.
The pair have been trading verbal barbs for several months, with the storyline to a potential showdown growing.
And in an exclusive interview on talkSPORT Breakfast, Okolie has suggested he is ready for the showdown to be made as soon as possible.
He said: “It’s a fight that I wanted, when we was at the last press conference we shook hands.
“But in the background, Dillian has been running scared.
“Now we are relatively both free and that, because he has pulled out of the fight.
“If there is a time to get it on, why not now?”
Whyte has struggled for activity this year having yet to lace up his gloves in 2025.
The ‘Body Snatcher’ was set to step in the ring with Joe Joyce back in February, but the bout collapsed.
GettyAnd a huge fight with Okolie is seen as a big opportunity for him next[/caption]He is looking to get back into the world title mix imminently, with the years ticking by since his world title challenge against Tyson Fury in 2022 which ended in defeat.
His promoter, Frank Warren, recently revealed that a huge opportunity has cropped up in August.
And the potentially big showdown could well be against Okolie, but Warren believes they will be able to get it over the line.
Warren explained: “He’s not going to be on the card now because he has had the opportunity of a big fight in August.
“We are looking at the moment to get that over the line.
“It is a big fight for him, so that is going to take priority.
Okolie made a good impression on his debut at heavyweightGetty“He wants that. He wants a bigger fight than he would have got at Ipswich. It is a really big fight.”
Okolie would be a live opponent given his previous pedigree.
‘The Sauce’ has reigned as world champion at both cruiserweight and bridgerweight.
After moving up to the blue-riband division, Okolie made a splash on his debut dispatching of Hussein Muhamed in December last year.
He too is hoping to move up the ranks and throw himself in with big names, in a bid to make his own push towards world level.
