Some people just seem to have a sixth sense for health trends and they call them long before they go mainstream. As it turns out, legendary Hollywood actor James Brolin (the father of Josh and ex-husband of Barbra Streisand) is one of them.
Brolin, who is best known for his TV roles in Marcus Welby and Hotel and movie turns, including his recent appearance in Ransom Canyon, is a longtime fan of superfoods. While promoting his movie Sisters on the TODAY Showbackin 2015, the 84-year-old revealed to Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb how he’s relied on chia seeds for years—long before they popped up in grocery store puddings and overnight oats. In fact, his go-to breakfast is a raspberry chia seed yogurt parfait that he whips up regularly, and it’s loaded with good-for-you ingredients.

“Chia seeds are a high mountain seed that the Aztecs [loved],” he said. “It was one of the foods of the kings. If you put them in water, they start to swell up.”
But Brolin’s favorite breakfast isn't solely focused on chia seeds. In fact, it's a powerhouse breakfast that's easy to make and delightful to eat. Here’s what it involves, plus how to whip it up for yourself.

What Makes James Brolin’s Raspberry Chia Seed Yogurt Parfait So Great?
There’s a lot to love about this dish. For starters, it has a creamy yogurt base, which is a good source of calcium and also helps support gut health. Then, of course, come the chia seeds, which are rich in fiber and help you feel fuller longer. Chia seeds are also a good source of complete protein, which helps support muscle growth. You’ll even get some omega-3 fatty acids in the mix for brain and heart health.
Brolin says he also adds flax seeds to the mix, which have similar health benefits as chia seeds. Because neither chia seeds nor flax seeds are a grain, Brolin adds that this recipe is good for people on gluten-free or grain-free diets.
And then there are the juicy raspberries. The berries add a bright burst of sweetness, along with plenty of antioxidants.

How to Make James Brolin’s Raspberry Chia Seed Yogurt Parfaits
Brolin keeps his chia seed parfait recipe laid-back. His method is more “blend and go” than exact science, but here's the gist of how he makes the dish.
In a blender, combine unsweetened yogurt, chia seeds, flax seeds and a handful of fresh raspberries. Add a splash of liquid—Brolin suggests using your favorite milk (dairy or plant-based). Blend everything together, then transfer the chia pudding to the fridge and let it chill for at least 2 hours. The mixture will thicken as the chia seeds soak up the liquid.
When ready to serve, spoon layers of the raspberry chia seed yogurt parfaits with fresh berries into cups and top with dried cherries for a little texture and chew. For a fun finishing touch, Brolin recommends whipped coconut cream. Just scoop the solid part from a can of coconut milk (feel free to add sweetener if desired) and whip it until fluffy.
If you like a little extra sweetness, consider stirring in maple syrup or honey. Whether you’re easing into plant-based eating or just looking for a healthy new breakfast idea, James Brolin’s chia seed parfait is a wholesome way to start the day.
