Christopher Carson, son of the late, great Johnny Carson, has died, according to Johnny's longtime friend, Howard Smith.
On the June 2 episode of the Nostalgia Tonight podcast, Smith said that Christopher died earlier this year at the age of 74. Smith said that he'd done his best to stay in touch with Johnny's son after the late night talk show icon died in 2005.
"When John died, I tried to keep in communication with Chris. I moved and bought a house outside of Fort Lauderdale. And this golf club that I joined, I said to the guy, I said, 'you guys know Chris Carson? And the guy said, oh yeah, he's a member here,'" Smith recalled.
"And I go, 'oh God.' I said, 'well, I'm trying, you know, I'm a friend of his dad and all that, and I've been trying to get ahold of Chris, and Chris never got back with me.,'" he added. Smith then said that he was talking to Johnny's nephew Jeff Sotzing about two months ago when Sotzing shared the sad news.

"He looks at me and goes, 'Howard, Chris just died last week,'" Smith said. It's unclear how Christopher died.
Johnny and his first wife, Joan Morrill Wolcott, had two other sons before their 1963 divorce. Richard Carson was born in 1951 and Cory Carson was born in 1953. Christopher was the oldest of the three siblings.
