The race for San Diego County’s District 1 Supervisor is underway — some of the 370,000 registered voters in the district already may have received their mail-in ballots for the special election while others will this week.
Completed ballots can be returned in any of the 29 official ballot drop boxes across the district from Tuesday to 8 p.m. July 1st, when polls close on the last day of voting. Visit sdvote.com to check the location list or the locator map to find a ballot box.
District 1 voters also may vote in person starting June 21 at any one of seven vote centers. The polls will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. until the final day of voting, when polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The District 1 supervisor represents the South Bay, which includes the cities of Chula Vista, Imperial Beach and National City, along with the San Diego neighborhoods of South Park, San Ysidro, and Barrio Logan.
The five-member Board of Supervisors oversees the county government, administers various state and federally-funded programs, such as CalFresh and Medi-Cal, approves the county budget and passes emergency ordinances, amongst other responsibilities.
Paloma Aguirre, a registered Democrat and the current mayor of Imperial Beach, is facing off with John McCann, a registered Republican and the current mayor of Chula Vista, for the position.
McCann led Aguirre by approximately 10% in the April primary, ultimately collecting 42.40% of the votes. Both fell short of receiving over 50%, triggering the run-off.
