Clear Lake – “Everything is a big Secret? Shhhh….Nobody is talking.” You can tell that bass tournament fishing is in mid-season form. No one wants to give out any good information. This is what I know. The top water bite has started in the early morning hours. Run a weedless frog over the mats or a Senko rigged weightless and weedless. Fish them both the same. Move across the weeds, stopping at openings and wait for the blow up. When fishing the mats, you must use braided fishing line. When you catch a fish, you will bring up a whole bunch of weedy muck along with it. Top water mat fishing can be a lot of fun! After the sun comes up, the top water bite dies off. I would recommend that you fish under docks, flipping a Senko, Brushog or a drop shot worm under them. Give it several tries. If you don’t get any action, move on to the next dock.
***** ALSO, the word is that tournament anglers last week caught all their big bass of beds? Huh? Bass on beds spawning? Still? Yup…Interesting… Ooopps, – “Shhhh it a secret!”
Lake Mendocino – Our hometown lake continues to be a great place to fish. The word is out, judging by the number of anglers on the water. Folks, you have to get up EARLY and be on the water by 5:30. It is so peaceful, and the bass fishin‘ is excellent before the rest of the world wakes up. Try poppin’ along a frog or top water lure. One of my favorites is a Bill Dance Spittin‘ image. Boy, is it worth it! After 8 am. change over to drop shottin’. Set your hook up about 18-24 inches. This will help you catch the suspending and cruising bass.
I also have been told by a reader that the Catfishin’ is very good right now in Crappie Cove. The cats are snooping around in the shallows looking for newly hatched (fry) bass to eat. Try live minnows or worms, they both have been working well.
Lake Pillsbury- The lake up on the mountain is the most beautiful lake in our area. Even though the road is not the greatest, it is still worth the trip, especially if you can put together a few days to go camping. The trout fishin’ has been rated fair to good lately. The warmer water temperatures has the trout down in deeper water. Troll the east side of the lake with your down rigger set at 20 to 25 feet. Use a flasher and trail it with a nightcrawler.
The bass fishing has been pretty good. Most anglers are catching four to twelve bass per outing. Top water early in the morning, then change to fishing plastics, swim baits or crank baits. No matter what species of fish you are after, the early morning hours is the best.
Lake Sonoma – How about Salmon fishing Lake Sonoma? Huh? Yup, you read that right. There are a bunch of land locked Salmon in the lake. Anglers have been hooking into them trolling a flasher trailing it with a Little Cleo. The key is to be trolling at 1.5 miles per hour. Sounds like fun, huh?
The bass fishin’ has been fair lately. Like most lakes in our area, there is a good top water bite early in the mornings. Toss a plug or a frog around submersed trees and along weed lines. Later in the morning, switch over to a Baby Brushog, Sweet Beaver, or dropshootin’ a wacky hooked worm.
Be safe-Be Kind-Watch out for the other guy!
