DRIVERS risk their car insurance costs skyrocketing for merely picking up a single traffic ticket – and it’s worse depending on where you live.
A new study has found that insurance rates following something like a speeding ticket can feel like extra punishment with the rise in premiums.
As reported by KTLA, Bankrate, a consumer financial services company, also found that location plays a big part in how much premiums go up after a single ticket – and it’s not necessarily related to the states with the highest insurance premiums.
New York, for example, has the highest average premium for full coverage at $4,192.
However, according to data from Quadrant Information Services, the lowest rate increased after a speeding conviction was just 7%.
In fact, it was found that North Carolina, with an average full coverage premium of $1,957, has the highest rate increase after one ticket – at an astounding 49%.
Compared to other states, where increases are controlled by insurance companies, North Carolina has a state-controlled, pre-determined rate increase.
This is tied to different speeding convictions as part of the Safe Driver Incentive Plan (SDIP).
This means speeding by 10 mph or less will result in a 40% rate increase, while those involved in a prearranged highway race – which is deemed the highest SDIP penalty – can expect a 340% rate spike.
This follows a recent, concerning trend of average premiums jumping in price – with research by CheapInsurance finding that, on average, prices have risen by over 20% since 2020.
Fausto Bucheli, Founder & President at CheapInsurance, said: “Car insurance isn’t getting cheaper – but being informed can help consumers beat the trend.
“We’ve found that most drivers are overpaying simply because they haven’t re-quoted their policy in over a year.
“With rising costs, it’s more important than ever to be proactive.”

A new summer safety campaign is targetting careless drivers – meaning they risk instant fines over their seat habits. Those who attempt to evade this crackdown will be ticketed with a $50 fine and possibly face other serious consequences.
Louisiana drivers have been asked to buckle up this summer or face a fee, as reported by CBS affiliate WAFB.
As part of the “Click it or Ticket” campaign, law enforcement officers have urged drivers to use their seatbelts diligently.
Officers will be patrolling the streets through Sunday, June 1, issuing tickets to those who fail to stay safe on the road.
Offenders will be given a first-time violation of $50 if they’re caught not wearing their seatbelt.
How to fight a parking ticket
You can avoid being ticketed by following all posted laws and ordinances, but sometimes mistakes are made
Like any form of citation, parking tickets are preventable by reading and obeying posted signage. However, when visiting a new city, or state, or in a hurry, things can be missed and mistakes are made.
Suddenly there’s a ticket you weren’t prepared to pay for. If the ticket is a surprise to you, there are a few things you can do to help your case when appealing a parking ticket.
Carefully read the ticket. Look for errors like incorrect street names, license plate numbers, vehicle make and model, time and date, etc. Errors would then make the ticket invalid. Take photos. Of the vehicle in the parking space, lack of signage, or other vehicles that weren’t cited for performing the same parking job. If the ticket involves parking too close to something like a fire hydrant, a photo showing a reasonable distance would help your case. Make sure metadata with the time and date are accessible. Signs that are obstructed by trees, or are on bent posts, or aren’t “obvious” are great things to photograph, too. Make sure the statute that was violated is listed on the ticket. If not listed, the ticket is not valid. Promptly follow the appeal instructions on the ticket. All legitimate tickets will have directions for appeal. Waiting until the very last moment weakens your argument and can result in late fees. When in court, avoid these phrases as they reduce your credibility and weaken your argument: “I didn’t know the law.” “I was on my way to move my car.” “I can’t afford this ticket.” “I’ve been doing this for years.” “I checked with the parking officer, who said it was OK.” Contact a lawyer. If you’re running into roadblocks and feel stuck, it may be best to reach out to a traffic lawyer in your area. Many have free case consultations.Source: Reader’s Digest
