Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar was not impressed with growing calls for Shreyas Iyer to be considered as Team India’s next captain after his performances in IPL 2025. The legendary cricketer stated that Shubman Gill has recently been appointed as the Test captain and deserves backing.
Shreyas Iyer is the only captain to lead three different teams to the final in the Indian Premier League. He guided Delhi Capitals (DC) to their first-ever final in 2020. Iyer led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their third title in 2024. The batter has captained Punjab Kings (PBKS) to the final in the 2025 season.
The 30-year-old cricketer was released by the Knight Riders ahead of the IPL 2025 auction. Shreyas was signed by Punjab Kings for a whopping ₹26.75 crore. Under his leadership, PBKS have reached their first IPL final in 11 years.
Shreyas has led by example with the bat. He has scored 603 runs in 16 matches at an average of 54.81 and a strike rate of 175.80, including six fifties. He hammered an unbeaten 87 off just 41 balls in Qualifier 2 against the Mumbai Indians (MI).
The Punjab team will take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the final match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, June 3. It is worth mentioning that Punjab suffered a heavy loss to Bengaluru in Qualifier 1.
There Is No Need to Create Pressure on Shubman Gill - Sunil Gavaskar
Sunil Gavaskar said that Shubman Gill, recently named India’s Test captain, deserves full support. He added that creating pressure on Gill before the England tour is unnecessary. Gavaskar stated that Gill should be allowed to lead without distractions.
"If he is worthy of being the captain or not, we first need to look at Shubman Gill, who is the Test captain. We need to give him opportunities. If we talk about such things, then we are creating undue pressure on Shubman Gill," Gavaskar said on Sports Tak.
"There is no need to create pressure on Shubman Gill before the England tour. You first need to realise that Shreyas Iyer is not even in the Indian team. There should be no talk about him being made the next Indian captain," he added.
Oh look, there is Shreyas Iyer - Sunil Gavaskar
As India prepares for a five-match Test series against England, Sunil Gavaskar stated that the team management and selectors need to show tremendous confidence in Shubman Gill.
"When he makes a return to the side then you can have a look at whether he can be made the captain or not. We need to show tremendous confidence in Shubman Gill, who has just been made the Test captain. He is our India captain," said Gavaskar.
"You shouldn't create doubts in his mind, there should be no pressure on him. You shouldn't create pressure, saying, 'Oh look, there is Shreyas Iyer'," he added.
Gujarat Titans (GT), led by Shubman Gill, were eliminated from the IPL 2025 after a 20-run defeat to Mumbai Indians in the Eliminator. Gill will return to action in the upcoming five-match Test series against England, starting on June 20 at Headingley.
