Airline rolls out policy that makes boarding cards irrelevant – but you must make 2-min check before arriving at airport

A MAJOR US airline has launched a new initiative that will speed up the boarding process.

Certain passengers will no longer be required to present a physical ID or boarding pass as part of the update.

The new move has been described as one of the biggest time-savers for travelers.

This process has recently come into effect at Transportation Security Administration checkpoints across four major airports.

American Airlines recently launched the TSA PreCheck Touchless ID at the locations, including two of its busy East Coast hubs.

The program was launched for American flyers at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), LaGuardia Airport (LGA), Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), and Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC).

The new process will see TSA PreCheck members flying with American breeze through checkpoints without showing a physical ID or boarding pass.

Passengers using TSA Touchless ID will get their photo taken upon approaching the security agent.

They won’t need to take out their driver’s license or passport at any point.

To verify the traveler’s identity, the system will compare the new image to others the government has on file, such as the one on a passport or in a trusted traveler program like Global Entry.

American announced last fall it would join in on the TSA’s faster, high-tech screening process.

The Point Guy’s Clint Henderson noted that this biometric setup has, at times, proven faster than services like Clear at airports where competing airlines had already partnered with the TSA.

American shared plans expand Touchless ID to more airports across its network, with a particular focus on its biggest hubs.

Flyers who want to opt into the faster security process must update their AAdvantage profile on the American website.

This process should only take you a maximum of two minutes, simply log in and go to the “information and password” section of your profile.

You will need to add your passport number and expiration date before clicking the box to opt in to TSA Touchless ID.

And this initiative is fully optional, so anyone who doesn’t want to opt into the touchless program can stick with the traditional method of showing the agent their identification before every flight.

    Applying for a REAL ID

The process varies by state, but residents will need a few documents to apply for a REAL ID before the deadline.

No matter the state, the application process can be started online by scanning and uploading the necessary documents, basic information, and Social Security numbers. Once submitted and reviewed, an in-person visit to the DMV or your state’s department agency is necessary for an attendant to verify the documents.

From there, a thumbprint will be recorded in the system, and a photo will be issued for the ID before it’s mailed.

The documents needed are those that show:

Full legal name (previous driver’s license, passport, etc) Date of birth (like a birth certificate, or an official copy of one) Social Security number (Social Security card) Two proofs of residence (like a utility bill or voter registration card) Lawful status

Travelers will need to renew their enrollment in the program each year.

It is free of charge, aside from the existing membership fee required to access the TSA PreCheck lanes.

For new members, TSA PreCheck starts at $78 for a five-year membership.

Global Entry, which offers both PreCheck access and an expedited trip through U.S. Customs and Border Protection passport control, costs $120.

Some popular travel credit cards will reimburse members for these application fees.
