What It Feels Like for a Girl is about to take viewers on a journey back to the heady club scene of the year 2000.
The coming-of-age drama, inspired by the memoirs of writer Paris Lees, tells the story of 15-year-old Byron coming to terms with their sexuality and gender identity.
Lees, who wrote and executive produced the show, said: “I’m excited, hysterical, thrown and overblown with bliss, but most of all I’m just having so much fun bringing this universe to life in a visual medium.
“It’s a primal scream – from the depths of a council estate – against a world that would prefer people who don’t fit the norm didn’t exist.
“But we do and we’re not going away, we’re not apologising and we’re not shutting up.
“This is a deeply personal project and I’m thrilled to be working with the BBC and the team at Hera who have been so supportive of both me and my creative vision.”
It launches on the BBC this week with a cast which includes Laura Haddock, Michael Socha and Hannah Walters.

But teenager Byron feels stuck in a small, working-class town that hasn’t been the same since the coal mine shut down in the 1980s.
Tired of being torn between living with his mum, his dad and his granny Mommar Joe, the 15-year-old wants to get away and doesn’t care how.
Making a bid for freedom, Byron escapes to Nottingham’s nightclub scene and meets the East Midlands’ premier podium-dancer-cum-hellraiser Lady Die.
Adopted into Lady Die’s chaotic family of trouble-makers “The Fallen Divas”, Byron joins a rollercoaster ride of hedonism at the heart of the UK’s early 2000s club scene.
However, the party can’t last and when Byron is seduced by bad-boy Liam events occur which will change their lives forever.
What It Feels Like for a Girl is about a journey of self-discovery and self-destruction.
