‘Just hoofed it 36’ – PGA Tour winner splits with caddie before brutally missing out on US Open

Max Homa carried his own bag for 38 holes as he missed qualification for the US Open on ‘golf’s longest day.’

The Californian, part of the 2023 US Ryder Cup team, has fallen from a career-high ranking of sixth in the world, to 90th, and was one of numerous stars attempting to book their spot for Oakmont.

Ten different locations across the United States played host to final qualifying on Monday.

A total of 47 places in the field were up for grabs ahead of the third major of the year, which begins on June 12 after Scottie Scheffler’s dominant win at the PGA Championship.

Homa played two rounds at Kinsale Golf and Fitness Club in Powell, Ohio, with six qualifying spots on offer.

Despite a solid day’s play, he gave away costly shots at the end of each round.

He bogeyed his final two holes in the morning for a three-under 69, and had set himself up to advance without a playoff when he reached the par-5 ninth hole in two on what was the final hole of his second.

From 25 feet, Homa’s left-to-right putt wandered and dipped below the hole.

He then pulled the birdie putt, settling for a 70 and five-under 139 total.

That put him into a five-man playoff alongside Rickie Fowler, Cameron Young, Eric Cole and Chase Johnson.

Young took the final qualifying spot with a birdie, while Homa moved on to a second playoff to determine the first alternate — and a likely spot at the US Open — and four-putted the hole.

He is not entirely out of contention for the 2025 US Open and is playing the Canadian Open later this week.

However, the American would likely have to win the event to climb into the top 60 in the world rankings.

Any player in the top 60 not otherwise eligible earns a berth into Oakmont.

To make his experience on Monday even more painful, Homa was on his lonesome for the entirety of the sport’s longest day, having split from his caddie of two months, Bill Harke.

The sight of Homa, who saw one of his shots blocked by a caddie at the Masters, lugging his own bag around drew plenty of attention on social media.

But the PGA Tour star himself was in no mood to discuss the situation.

“I’d much rather talk about the golf instead of all the questions about the caddie,” he said. “I’m good. Just hoofed it 36.”

According to the Associated Press, a person informed of the split said only that Harke had ‘lost his job.’

They spoke on condition of anonymity, because word of the separation needed to come from Homa himself.

But the 34-year-old remained tight-lipped on Monday, and dropped only one clue about the split.

“It seems to be better than when someone is standing next to me for some reason,” he said, when asked how his attitude held up.

“I might need to walk by myself more. Maybe I just looked at it as a nice, peaceful walk.

“Probably got to battle some demons and have no one to lean on. Maybe that helps a little bit.

“There’s no one… everything is me. The battle helped that a little bit.”

The 30-year-old who has a tie for third place as his best career showing at the majors had appeared at every major since The Open in 2019, but that run is now at risk of coming to an end.

He has struggled during play at Oakmont too, where he has missed the cut in five of his six appearances.
