Borussia Dortmund believe Jobe Bellingham wants to join them ahead of their transfer rivals, talkSPORT understands.
The Sunderland midfielder has been attracting interest from European clubs this summer.
Bellingham previously held talks with Eintracht Frankfurt over a potential move to the Bundesliga side.
The 19-year-old jetted to Germany just days after the Championship play-off final to visit the club’s facilities.
Frankfurt will compete in the Champions League next season having come third in the German top flight.
However, Dortmund are in the lead in the race for Bellingham’s signature.
Personal terms are not expected to be an issue, although a deal will still needs to be agreed with the Black Cats.
Bellingham has three years remaining on his contract at the Stadium of Light after signing an extension last summer.
Niko Kovac’s side are preparing for a 10th consecutive season in the Champions League after ending their Bundesliga campaign in fourth.
The 1997 European champions will also compete in the Club World Cup in the USA later this month.
Dortmund have been drawn alongside Brazilian club Fluminense, South African outfit Mamelodi Sundowns and South Korean side Ulsan HD in the group stage.
Since signing from Birmingham in 2023, he has scored 11 goals and provided four assists in 90 appearances for the club.

The England international spent three years with BVB after signing from Birmingham as a 17-year-old in 2020.
He went on to win the German Cup in his first season on his way to making 132 appearances for Dortmund.
Real Madrid ultimately made Bellingham the most expensive British player ever in 2023 by completing a £115million deal to sign him.
Just two years on, he has already won five major trophies having lifted both LaLiga and the Champions League in his debut campaign.
