CARSON — The Galaxy finally saw an end to their season-opening winless streak.
After 16 games of failure (12 losses and four draws), the Galaxy secured their first win of the MLS season, defeating Real Salt Lake 2-0 Saturday at Dignity Health Sports Park.
The win was the first in MLS competition for the Galaxy (1-12-4, 7 points) since winning MLS Cup back in December and just the second of the season. The Galaxy defeated CS Herediano in the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup Round of 16.
The quality of losses has been of all varieties, from the blowout 7-0 against New York Red Bulls to an agonizing one like May 24 in San Diego, where they allowed the winning goal deep into stoppage time.
The Galaxy opened the scoring, with Lucas Sanabria getting his first MLS goal, finishing off a superb dummy turn and feed from Matheus Nascimento in the 17th minute.
The pairing has taken some time to get accustomed to their new surroundings, not only in MLS, but also in the U.S. Sanabria (22 years old) joined the Galaxy from Uruguay and Club Nacional and Nascimento (21 years old) arrived on loan from Botafogo in Brazil.
After a slow start, Joseph Paintsil finally opened his goal account for the 2025 season, scoring in the 55th minute.
The Galaxy did a decent job of keeping RSL from any clear-cut goal-scoring opportunities. Galaxy goalkeeper Novak Micovic, who was making his third consecutive start, pounced on a shot in the early moments of the game. In the 42nd minute, Zavier Gozo shot from outside the box and hit the post.
The clean sheet is also a boost to a group that entered the game having allowed 36 goals, the most in the league. Micovic was credited with four saves.
It also didn’t hurt that RSL entered with its own problems, stuck in 13th place, having scored just 16 goals.
The last three meetings with RSL at Dignity Health Sports Park had ended in draws. This was the first Galaxy win against RSL at home since 2021.
The Galaxy will be off next week due to the international break, returning June 14 on the road against St. Louis City SC. The month of June is a light one, with only three games, all on the road (June 14, June 25 at Colorado and June 28 at San Jose.) The next home game is not until July 4.
