NORTHRIDGE — In the previous two City Open Division softball finals, Granada Hills Charter lost to Carson in heartbreaking fashion, including last year’s 1-0 defeat in 14 innings.

That didn’t happen Saturday when the two teams met for the third straight time in the finals.

Granada Hills was able to get revenge against its nemesis with an emphatic 11-2 win over the Colts in the CIF LA City Section Open final at Cal State Northridge.

It is the Highlanders’ first City title since 1981.

Starting pitcher and Lehigh commit Addison Moorman had a great outing for the Highlanders. Moorman threw a complete game with 11 strikeouts and gave up only two runs on four hits with one walk. Moorman was also the pitcher for the previous two title games against Carson.

“It feels so good to go out on top, especially against (Carson),” Moorman said. “To finally beat them, overcome that hurdle and then leave as a champion, feels really great.”

The Granada Hills offense had an explosion in the second inning when it scored seven runs on six hits and also capitalized on two throwing errors from Carson for a 7-1 lead.

Granada Hills (28-3), which won the West Valley League title this season, had the bases loaded with no outs when Victoria Rubio hit a groundout to score Annabella Ramirez to give them their first run of the game.

Jocelyn Jimenez then reached on a bunt with a throwing error from the Carson pitcher throwing home that scored two more Highlanders to give them a 3-1. Granada grabbed a 4-1 lead after Lainey Brown drove in Jimenez with a single with a throwing error that helped Brown and Jimenez to advance.

Elysse Diaz drove in Brown with an RBI single to give Granada Hills a 5-1 lead. The final two Granada Hills runs of the inning came from a Giselle Merida triple to score Diaz and then an RBI single from Ramirez in her second at-bat of the inning that scored Merida and gave them a 7-1 lead.

Brown hit the second of three triples for Granada Hills in the game to open the fourth inning. Diaz hit her second RBI single of the game to drive in Brown in the fourth. Merida had her second RBI of the game when she grounded out and Diaz scored to give Granada a 9-1 lead after four innings.

Granada’s final two runs of the game came in the sixth inning. UC Santa Barbara commit Zoe Justman hit an RBI triple to score Merida in the inning and then Justman scored on a wild pitch to make the score 11-2.

Justman finished the game 2 for 4 with the one RBI.

“I’m so proud of these girls and their effort,” Granada Hills coach Ivan Garcia said. We’ve been preaching to wait for your moment and the girls capitalized today.”

Garcia noted that it was a nice play the final at Cal State Northridge, compared to the previous two title games that were played at Long Beach State and Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Brown finished the game 2 for 3 with an RBI and a triple. Diaz and Ramirez were both 2 for 4 with Diaz having two RBI singles and Ramirez had one. Merida was 2 for 4 in the game with two RBIs.

The Carson offense struggled to get much going against Moorman, who had two innings where she struck out the side.

The two Carson runs came on an RBI double in the second inning from Letu’u Simi and then a home run from Rylee Gardner in the sixth inning.

Granada Hills has declined a spot in the CIF SoCal Regional playoffs that begin next week.
