Gov. Tim Walz tells Democrats to look inward when considering 2024 presidential loss

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, the Democratic vice presidential nominee in 2024, told Democrats to look at their own party if they are concerned about the current state of politics.

Walz, speaking to the California Democratic Party’s convention in Anaheim on Saturday, May 31, described the U.S. as being in a political mess because “some of it is our (Democrats’) own doing.”

“I may be the last person to lecture on this topic. But none of us can shy away from having hard conversations,” Walz said.

“The Democratic Party — the party of the working class — lost a big chunk of the working class,” he said about the November 2024 election, when voters elected Republican President Donald Trump to a second term in the White House.

Walz went on to say that Democrats have good ideas, but the average person doesn’t see the party implementing bold ideas. Democrats, he said, should govern with courage and not be afraid to make mistakes.

Walz’s speech in Anaheim was his second stop at a coastal state’s convention on Saturday.

Earlier, Walz sought to energize Democrats in South Carolina at the state party’s convention there. The Palmetto State event is generally considered a platform for national Democrats and potential White House hopefuls.

Walz was one of two speakers on Saturday’s California convention lineup — the other being U.S. Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey — whose name has come up as a potential presidential candidate in 2028.

During the morning session, Booker fired up delegates at the California convention with a truncated version of the 25-hour marathon speech that he delivered on the floor of the U.S. Senate in April.

Speaker after speaker at the Democratic event denounced the actions of the Trump administration, calling out Republicans’ attempts to cut Medicaid and food assistance in order to, as the Democrats put it, “line the pockets” of the wealthy.

The California Democratic Party Convention kicked off in earnest on Friday and will wrap up on Sunday. Convention organizers said an estimated 4,000 people registered to attend events throughout the weekend.

Other elected officials who spoke Saturday included U.S. Sen. Adam Schiff and Reps. Robert Garcia, D-Long Beach; Derek Tran, D-Orange; Sydney Kamlager-Dove, D-Los Angeles; and Dave Min, D-Irvine.

State Senate Pro Tem Mike McGuire, D-North Coast, and Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas, D-Salinas, also spoke.
