David McGoldrick’s fairytale return to Notts County has come to an end and fans aren’t happy.
The veteran striker had returned to his boyhood club in 2023, but has now rejected an extension, the club has confirmed.
A statement from the League Two side’s board of directors read: “While we’re of course disappointed to be losing a player of David’s quality and character, he leaves having given us many fantastic memories over the last two years.
“Unfortunately we have been unable to reach an agreement on this occasion, but everyone at Meadow Lane thanks David wholeheartedly for his charismatic performances, wonderful goals, leadership and dedication.
“It was special to see him realise his dream of returning to Meadow Lane and we wish him all the best in the next chapter of his brilliant career.”
It’s been a gutting few weeks for Magpies fans, who first had to deal with a League Two semi-final play-off defeat to Wimbledon on May 17.
And now one of their own is heading for the exit door, despite previously sounding confident about a stay.
Asked about an extension in March, the former Republic of Ireland striker said: “I’m not worried about it.
“That gives you the drive as well, because maybe when you have years on your contract you can get comfy. I’ve been there.
“There are ten games left and I know what I’m playing for. I’m playing for the club to get high up the league and playing for myself to try to get another contract.”
McGoldrick’s ambitions were backed up by manager Stuart Maynard, who said: “He’s incredible, we want him to be at the club,” after the season finale.
Yet Maynard has since been sacked, and now McGoldrick is gone too.
McGoldrick was adored back in NottinghamGetty Most readers may remember him best from his time at Bramall LaneFans have pointed the finger at the club rather than the player, concluding that the 37-year-old would have accepted a better paid deal.
One supporter replied to the news on social media by writing: “Embarrassing Notts, you have a player that the fanbase love and is willing to play for half of his value due to his support for the club, and you still try and scrimp on his wages… you’re beginning to take this fanbase for a bit of a ride, we will not grow without ambition.”
Another added: “Not good this. I get it, injury prone and probably not worthy of the deal he was on. But the retirement story was there to be written, and we’ve cut it short. Pain that.”
While a third said: “Thanks for coming back Mr McGoldrick, sad to see you leave like this.”
McGoldrick started his career with Notts County in 2003 before making it to the top of the game with Southampton and Sheffield United.
He managed 63 Premier League appearances with both of those sides, scoring ten goals.
Born in Nottingham in 1987, McGoldrick went on to represent Ireland, the country of his grandfather.
Since returning to Notts County from Derby in 2023 he managed 30 goals in 76 games.
