Gujarat Titans' (GT) journey in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 came to a heartbreaking end as they were knocked out by the Mumbai Indians in the Eliminator. The defeat left not only the players but also the Titans' head coach Ashish Nehra's children crying in the stands at the stadium.
Mumbai Indians defeated Gujarat Titans by 20 runs in a high-scoring contest at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur on Friday, May 30. With the win, Mumbai secured a spot in Qualifier 2, where they will face Punjab Kings (PBKS), who had earlier lost Qualifier 1.
As the final ball was bowled at the Mullanpur Stadium, Ashish Nehra’s young son broke down in the stands. Nehra’s daughter was also seen in tears after the loss. Shubman Gill’s sister, Shahneel, who has been a regular visitor at GT games, was visibly emotional.
The Ahmedabad-based team suffered their third consecutive defeat in the tournament after losing to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK). They were at the top of the standings for most of the season, but a string of losses pushed them into the Eliminator against the Mumbai Indians.

Mumbai Indians Post 228/5 after Winning the Toss
Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya won the toss and chose to bat first in the crucial Eliminator against Gujarat Titans. Gerald Coetzee and Kusal Mendis dropped catches, giving early lifelines to Rohit Sharma, which proved costly.
Rohit capitalized on the missed chances and scored 81 runs off 50 balls, including 9 fours and 4 sixes. Jonny Bairstow, who stepped in as a replacement for Ryan Rickelton, scored 47 runs in an 84-run opening stand. Suryakumar Yadav (33), Tilak Varma (25), and Hardik Pandya (22) also contributed.
GT bowlers R Sai Kishore and Prasidh Krishna took two wickets each, but Mumbai Indians ended their innings at a massive total of 228/5 in 20 overs.

In response, Gujarat Titans’ chase got off to a shaky start when their captain, Shubman Gill, was dismissed early by Trent Boult on the fourth ball of the first over. The Titans were pushed on the back foot from the beginning.
Sai Sudharsan and Washington Sundar counter-attacked the Mumbai bowlers. Sai scored 80 runs off 49 balls, including 10 fours and one six, while Washington added 48 runs. Kusal Mendis also chipped in with a quick cameo of 20 runs before being dismissed hit-wicket in the seventh over.
Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult bowled tightly in the final overs. Their disciplined bowling helped Mumbai Indians secure the win and progress to Qualifier 2, where they will face Punjab Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on June 1.
